What is upstyling, and who is it for?

An updo is more than hair gathered on top of your head. Your stylist plans the shape, builds a secure base with elastic bands and pins, and then layers in the detail, such as twists, braids or soft pulled out pieces, that makes the finished style look intentional.

People book upstyling for weddings, formals, reunions, galas and any evening where hair worn up feels right. It works on many lengths and textures, and your stylist can add hair pieces or your own accessories if you want more volume or sparkle. Bring a photo and a picture of the outfit, if you can.

Hair texture matters too. Straight, wavy and curly hair each take pins differently, so your stylist reads how your hair behaves and chooses the right foundation, whether that is a sleek low shape, a high twist or a loose braided crown. Nothing is copied from a template.

Unlike a blow out, the goal here is hold. The style has to survive hugs, dancing and a long night, so structure comes first and polish follows. If you would rather wear your hair down but still want a finished look, the signature blow out is a lovely alternative.

  • Built to hold

Your stylist anchors the style with elastic bands and pins first, then shapes the visible details on top, so it stays secure through photos, dinner and the dance floor.

  • Pins, braids, pieces

The toolkit includes bobby pins, braids, pulled up shapes, hair pieces and accessories. Your stylist chooses the mix that suits your hair length, texture and the look you picture.

  • Bring your inspiration

A photo of a style you love, plus the neckline of your outfit, helps your stylist tailor the shape. Bring any accessories you want worked into the finished style.

  • Clean, dry start

Arrive with hair that is freshly washed and fully dry. Clean hair is easier to shape, so your stylist can spend the appointment building the style rather than prepping.

What happens at an upstyling appointment?

Your stylist begins by talking through the occasion, your outfit and how you want to feel in the style. Then they prepare the hair, often adding gentle texture so pins have something to grip, and section it according to the design.

The foundation goes in first with elastic bands, followed by braids or twists and pulled up shapes. Pins are tucked away so they disappear, hair pieces or accessories are placed, and the final shape is refined until it sits just right from every angle.

You leave with a style that has been checked from the front, the sides and the back, along with a few tips for getting through the event comfortably.

How do I make it last through the event?

Keep the style dry and avoid leaning hard against surfaces that tug on the pins. Stay away from rubbing the style with your hands, and let your stylist know if you will be in a humid or windy setting so the hold can be planned for it.

When you take it down, remove pins one by one and brush gently from the ends upward. Brushing from the roots can pull tangles tight. A bit of conditioner in the shower the next day helps hair recover from being worn up.

When is upstyling not the right choice?

Very short hair has limits. If your hair does not reach into a shape the pins can hold, your stylist will be honest and may suggest a half up style, a braid accent or a polished blow dry instead.

Fresh color near the date is another consideration. If you want a new shade or highlights before the event, book color or a gloss beforehand, and plan the styling for a separate day if you can.

Frequently asked questions

Should my hair be washed before I arrive?

Yes. Arrive with clean, dry hair, free of heavy conditioner or oils. Freshly washed hair is easier to shape and takes pins and bands better. Hair that is not dry delays the start and makes the style harder to hold.

Can I bring my own hair pieces or accessories?

Yes, please do. Your stylist can work combs, clips, pearls or other accessories into the style, and can also use hair pieces to add fullness. Bring them to the appointment so the design can be planned around them.

What if my hair is fine or very smooth?

Fine and silky hair can still hold a beautiful updo. Your stylist builds in texture and structure so the pins stay put. Tell them how your hair behaves on a normal day, and the plan will be shaped around that. Texture is something your stylist works with, not against.

Can you style a few people for the same event?

Each guest books their own appointment, so call (513) 229-8818 and explain the occasion. We will talk through the timing and help match each person to the right stylist. Mention the date early so the right stylists are available for your group.
