Color Correction / Custom Color · Mason, OH

Color that finally looks like you meant it

A custom plan for box dyed hair and stubborn regrowth, built one step at a time around your hair and your life.

Color correction is a custom, multi technique color plan that reworks hair that has uneven, patchy or heavy previous color into a balanced, lived in result. At Kim Harper Salon in Mason, Ohio, your stylist designs it after a free consultation, so nothing is guessed.

Before and after of a balayage color transformation

What custom color actually means

Custom color is not one formula. It is a plan that may combine balayage, a root melt, toning and more, chosen because of what is already on your hair. That is why a consultation comes first, and why we require one.

This service is built for guests starting with box dyed hair, or those carrying a significant grow out from previous color. If your ends are darker than your roots, you see bands where old color stops, or a shade turned out nothing like the box promised, this is the right conversation to have.

The goal is a result that looks natural as it grows. Instead of a hard line at the root, your stylist blends tones so regrowth fades softly. Many guests find this means fewer emergency visits, because the color is designed to age well.

Some plans take more than one appointment, especially when going lighter from dark color. Spreading the work out is how we protect your hair and reach a better finish. You can also pair it with a gloss or toner to fine tune the final shade.

Book Your Appointment
  • A real consultation

You sit down with your stylist for a free 15 minute conversation. Bring photos, your color history and any box dye details. You leave with a clear quote and a plan you understand.

  • A plan, not a guess

Your stylist maps techniques to your hair, from balayage to a root melt to toning. Each step has a reason, and you hear the reason before anything gets applied.

  • Finished on dry hair

Color is checked on dry, styled hair, so a blowout or haircut is added to the service. That is how we see the true tone, and how you walk out with it looking right.

  • Honest timing

Plan on a few hours, and possibly more than one visit. If your goal needs gradual steps, we say so up front, so you are never surprised partway through.

How does the appointment go step by step?

First comes the consultation, which we recommend and, for this service, require. Your stylist looks at your roots, mid lengths and ends in natural light, and asks what you have used before. Then you talk about the result you want and how often you want to return.

On the day, your stylist applies custom mixed color in sections, often placing lightener only where it is needed. A root melt may follow to blend your natural shade into the lengths, then toning to settle the tone. Your hair is shampooed, then finished with a blowout so you can judge the color dry.

Expect a few hours in the chair, and ask your stylist whether a second visit would give a better outcome.

How do I keep corrected color looking good?

Ask your stylist for a color safe shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair. Redken, Wella, Keune and Kevin Murphy are the professional lines we work with, and your stylist can point you to the right one. Wash with cooler water when you can, and protect your hair from strong sun and heat tools.

Plan a follow up. Because the result is designed to grow out softly, many guests return for a gloss or toner to refresh shade and shine rather than a full redo. Your stylist will suggest a timeline based on your hair and how it grows.

Skip home touch ups in between. A second box color is the most common reason a good plan has to start over.

When is this not the right service?

If your color is healthy and you simply want brighter dimension, a full balayage or partial highlight may be a simpler fit. If you mainly need to cover grey, look at color and grey coverage.

We also want to be honest about limits. Hair that has been through repeated lightening or heavy box dye can only lift so far in one visit, and no stylist can promise a perfect result in a single sitting. Some goals call for patience and a staged approach, and sometimes the best advice is to wait a few weeks.

A consultation is the easiest way to find out. If your hair is fragile, a conditioning treatment can be added to support it along the way.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a consultation first?

Yes. For color correction and custom color, a consultation is required, and it is free for 15 minutes. Your stylist needs to see your hair in person to quote accurately and choose techniques. It also gives you time to ask questions before committing to anything.

Can you fix box dye in one visit?

Sometimes, but not always. It depends on how dark the box color is, how many layers sit on your hair and the shade you want. Your stylist will tell you honestly during the consultation whether one visit is realistic or whether a staged plan will serve your hair better.

How do I book if I am a new color guest?

New color guests are asked to call (513) 229-8818 for the first appointment, so we can match you with the right stylist, service and timing. After that first visit, you can book online. You can also fill out the new client page first.

What does it cost?

The price varies by stylist level, hair length, density and the result you want, so we do not list a single number here. Your consultation gives you an accurate quote. You can also see the Service Menu for current pricing and starting points.

Do I need to add a blowout or haircut?

Yes. Our menu is a la carte, and a blowout or haircut is added to every color service because color is finished on dry, styled hair. It lets your stylist check the tone and make small adjustments before you leave the chair.

What should I bring to my consultation?

Photos of the look you like, and ideally photos of colors you dislike too. Share what you have used on your hair, including any box dye, and roughly when. Tell your stylist how often you want to come back, because that shapes the whole plan.
